£128,000 Settlement
Pryers supported the family of Mrs G in a claim for medical negligence, after a delay in diagnosing renal cancer caused her death.
Mrs G underwent a CT scan of her pelvis which showed a renal pelvic tumour measuring 2.5cm in size.
The radiologist failed to report on the presence of the tumour which was consequently missed.
Pryers’ investigations showed that the Hospital had been negligent in failing to diagnose Mrs G with cancer at this stage.
It was sadly the case that, with appropriate treatment at that time, the tumour could have been surgically removed, the cancer would not have spread and Mrs G would likely have been cured.
Instead, Mrs G remained unaware of the tumour until she was diagnosed with cancer 18 months later.
By the time of the diagnosis, Mrs G’s tumour had grown to such an extent that it was inoperable. The Hospital’s negligent delay in diagnosing renal cancer had allowed time for it to spread and there were multiple lung metastases and mediastinal lymph nodes.
She received chemotherapy and radiotherapy and passed away shortly afterwards.
Independent oncological evidence estimated that the Hospital’s failings had resulted in a loss in Mrs G’s of life expectancy of 38 years.
Mrs G left behind a large family including a number of grandchildren. Whilst no amount of money could ever truly compensate them for their loss, Pryers negotiated an out of court settlement in the sum of £128,000.
The claim included a bereavement award and claim under the Fatal Accidents Act.
