Pryers secured compensation for Mrs F after a Hospital negligently mismanaged her prescription of Metformin, causing kidney failure.
Mrs F was prescribed Metformin to treat Type 2 diabetes.
For around three years she was under the care of an Endocrinologist at the Hospital.
She was monitored at six monthly intervals and suffered a gradual decline in her renal function, which culminated in an acute admission to Hospital with severe acute renal failure.
Mrs F’s condition had been allowed to deteriorate to such a level that she required intubation, ventilation and a period of intensive care with hemofiltration. As well as kidney failure, she was found to be suffering from severe lactic acidosis and hyperkalaemia.
Pryers’ investigations found that there were multiple failings in the Hospital care Mrs F received. NICE Guidelines were not followed. The dose of Metformin should have been adjusted and later should have been stopped altogether. The Hospital’s failures to do so were so poor that they amounted to negligence.
The Hospital’s negligence had caused Mrs F to endure a deterioration in her condition and intensive care stay. Fortunately, Mrs F made a good recovery and was not expected to suffer any long term injury as a result of the negligence.
After Pryers’ involvement, the Hospital admitted that they were at fault and agreed to pay compensation in the sum of £5,000.
Mrs F was pleased to accept this and relieved that, despite the Hospital’s negligence, severe and lasting personal injury had been avoided.
