Action for Brain Injury Week: Supporting brain injury survivors

By Carmel Walsh

Published In: Court of Protection

Last week marked Action for Brain Injury Week , an annual awareness campaign led by Headway , a charity dedicated to improving life after brain injury. This year’s theme, “We See You”, highlights the isolation and loneliness that many brain injury survivors and their families experience every day.

At Pryers Solicitors, this message resonates deeply with our Court of Protection team. We work closely with individuals whose lives have changed following a traumatic or acquired brain injury, and we see first-hand the challenges that can continue long after hospital treatment or rehabilitation ends.

For many survivors, the effects of brain injury are invisible to others. The result can often lead to loneliness, not because people want to withdraw, but because brain injury can fundamentally change how someone experiences the world around them.

Supporting brain injury survivors beyond the legal process

As Court of Protection solicitors, our role is about far more than managing finances or making legal decisions.

Our team supports brain injury survivors in rebuilding their lives, maintaining independence and accessing the care, rehabilitation and practical support they need to move forward with confidence.

That support may include:

  • Managing compensation awards to ensure long-term financial security
  • Coordinating rehabilitation, therapy and care packages
  • Helping clients access adapted accommodation and specialist equipment
  • Working with case managers, support workers and medical professionals
  • Supporting families navigating complex systems and difficult decisions
  • Facilitating opportunities for social engagement, hobbies and community involvement
  • Ensuring clients’ wishes, routines and personal goals remain central to decision-making

Every client is different, and every recovery journey is personal. Our role is to provide stability, reassurance and practical support so that individuals can focus on living as independently and meaningfully as possible.

Why Headway’s campaign matters

Headway’s “We See You” campaign is helping to bring greater awareness to the emotional and social impact of brain injury. The charity continues to provide vital support, information and advocacy to survivors, carers and families across the UK.

At Pryers, we are proud to support Headway as part of our wider commitment to corporate social responsibility. Through fundraising events, awareness initiatives and volunteering opportunities, we aim to contribute to the incredible work Headway does within the brain injury community. Through providing expert information for life after injury, to helping local communities through rehabilitation journeys, carer support and so much more that provides life-changing guidance for survivors.

Our team regularly takes part in fundraising challenges and awareness activities, and we also host coffee mornings and knowledge-sharing sessions with Headway representatives and service users. These partnerships help us better understand the experiences of survivors and ensure our legal support remains compassionate, informed and person-centred.

Helping clients feel seen, heard and supported

One of the most important aspects of Court of Protection work is building trusted relationships with clients and families. Many individuals living with brain injury can feel overlooked or misunderstood, particularly when their challenges are not immediately visible.

The message behind “We See You” is simple, but powerful.

It reminds survivors that their experiences matter. It reminds families and carers that their support does not go unnoticed. And it reminds professionals working in this field of the importance of listening, understanding and advocating for the people behind the injury.

At Pryers, we are committed to providing not only expert legal guidance, but also empathetic support that recognises the wider impact brain injury can have on everyday life.
