For Sian Thompson one such moment came recently when she attended the world premiere of a short film created by her client, Rachel-Ann.

Rachel-Ann, who has cerebral palsy, wrote and stars in Access Denied .

'Access Denied’ is an empowering semi-autobiographical film, about a gay twenty-year-old with cerebral palsy. It tells the story of Martha as she navigates the complex realities of love, identity, and independence while living with a disability. The story details how Martha faces instances of ableism as she attends events that are inaccessible and exclusive of people with disabilities.

The film was developed with the support of TAPE Community Music and Film, a North Wales-based charity that helps individuals use creative arts and media to tell their stories and amplify underrepresented voices.

As Rachel-Ann’s professional trustee, Sian has supported her journey by ensuring she has the freedom, encouragement and financial stability to pursue her ambitions and creative goals.

Speaking about the experience, Sian said:

“It was an absolute privilege to attend the premiere and see Rachel-Ann’s work receive the recognition it deserves. Her determination, creativity and advocacy are incredibly inspiring.”

The impact of Access Denied is already reaching far beyond the screen.

Following engagement with the film, the British Film Institute has begun reviewing the layout and accessibility of the certification information shown before films, with consideration for neurodiverse audiences.

The film has also attracted national attention from Icon Film Distribution, which will screen Access Denied nationwide ahead of showings of Madfabulous when it releases in June.

For Sian, the experience highlights the importance of person-centred support within Court of Protection work.

“Professional trusteeship is about much more than managing finances,” she explained. “It is about empowering individuals, supporting their aspirations and helping create opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach.”

Rachel-Ann’s story is a powerful example of how the right support, combined with talent and determination, can drive meaningful change, not only for one individual, but for wider communities too.
