Dan approached Pryers after suffering with pain and uncertainty for years, following a CT scan which suggested he had small bowel lymphoma.

CT scan not followed up

In 2013, Dan was suffering with loose stools and abdominal pain. He was referred for a CT scan of his abdomen and pelvis. The scan suggested he had small bowel lymphoma and a further CT scan was recommended. However, the hospital failed to advise Dan of the finding, or provide any follow-up care.

Meanwhile, Dan continued to suffer with fatigue and pain. It wasn’t until 18 months later that he was finally referred for the recommended CT.

The scan confirmed that Dan had a mass within his small bowel which was suggestive of possible low grade lymphoma. The next month he was admitted to hospital for a laparotomy to remove part of his bowel and colon (bowel resections and transverse colon segmental colectomy).

After years of pain and uncertainty, Dan finally received the correct diagnosis of small bowel gastrointestinal stromal tumour. As well as surgery, he needed chemotherapy to treat the tumour.

How Pryers helped

Pryers obtained expert evidence from a Colorectal Surgeon, an Oncologist and a Radiologist.  Their conclusion was that:

  • The lack of follow-up after his initial CT scan amounted to substandard treatment; and
  • Although Dan would have needed surgery and chemotherapy anyway, the delay prolonged his suffering.

We obtained £15,000 to compensate Dan for the prolonged pain and suffering he experienced. Dan was still undergoing chemotherapy when we settled his claim, but he hoped to move on with his life, free of pain.
