Pryers successfully obtained compensation for Mr J after a Hospital’s negligence caused him to suffer from a pressure sore to his leg.
Mr J suffered two broken ankles when he fell from a ladder. Plaster casts were applied to both ankles. Owing to the complex nature of one of the fractures, he required periodical changing of casts to alter the position of his ankle.
After the removal of his second cast, a pressure sore was discovered on his lower left leg. Despite this, a further cast was applied and the pressure sore was allowed to develop.
Pressure ulcers can cause serious pain and severe harm to patients, at a treatment cost to the NHS of billions of pounds per year. In the majority of cases they can be prevented if simple measures are followed. In recent years, the NHS have advocated a “zero tolerance” approach to pressure damage, seeking to protect patients from this avoidable injury.
Pryers investigated the occurrence and development of Mr J’s pressure sore. Independent medical expert evidence confirmed that the Trust were negligent in their failure to prevent the pressure damage and in delaying vital treatment, which caused the sore to deteriorate further.
Mr J eventually required an operation on the pressure sore as it became infected. This resulted in scarring around his ankle and a considerable amount of discomfort throughout the whole ordeal.
Mr J received £10,000 in compensation.
