£40,000 Settlement
Clara was pregnant with her 3rd child when the pregnancy was complicated by the baby not gaining enough weight. Clara was taken to the hospital at 38 weeks and her baby was delivered safely by caesarean section.
Following the caesarean section, Clara’s abdomen began to swell to larger than it was when she was 9 months pregnant. Clara was in a lot of pain and was particularly unwell. The doctors simply monitored Clara for a few days.
After a few days, Clara had a scan of her abdomen and it was discovered that there was a hole in her bowel and all her waste products were collecting in her abdomen and causing the problems she was having.
As it had taken so long for the problem to be diagnosed when Clara had emergency surgery they had to remove some of her bowel as it had died off. This meant Clara had a colostomy bag attached to her stomach so that her remaining bowel could rest and recover, while the bag on the outside of her stomach collected her waste products.
During this time Clara’s baby was discharged home with Clara’s husband. This had a massive psychological impact on Clara as she was unsure whether she would live to see her baby grow up, and was missing the first few vital weeks of bonding with her new born. Clara was eventually allowed to go home and reunited with her baby and husband after an additional week in hospital.
Claras’ claim was managed by Alice Houlden, a solicitor at Pryers Solicitors, who specialises in birth injuries. Detailed and thorough investigations were carried out and a settlement of £40,000 was secured for Clara to compensate her for the injury and psychological reaction.
