Pryers helped our client, Ava, seek justice after a medication error left her in severe mental distress.
Ava had a gastric band fitted in 2010, which slipped whilst she was on holiday with her family in Portugal in 2012. She underwent emergency surgery and was then flown back to the UK, where she spent a further 6 months in hospital undergoing numerous invasive procedures.
Whilst in hospital doctors decided to treat Ava with analgesia, a medication that acts to reduce pain. However, an administrative error meant she was instead treated with insulin. An insulin overdose can have serious complications, from confusion, dizziness, and irritability to hypoglycemic coma and even death.
Ava subsequently suffered with symptoms of confusion, exhaustion, and tunnel vision and reported feeling very fearful. This resulted in significant mental distress. Ava was moved to a different ward, as she was too scared to remain on that particular ward, and was prescribed antidepressants.
Pryers was able to obtain a report from a psychological expert who diagnosed her as suffering from twin psychiatric injuries amounting to PTSD and major depression. He suggested that she would need psychiatric input if she was to be admitted to hospital in the future due to her fear.
After long negotiations Ava was finally able to accept an offer of £20,000.
