Medication Error Caused Iron Overload

Medication Error Caused Iron Overload

£85,000 Settlement

Pryers acted on behalf of Mrs G who suffered serious and permanent complications after a Hospital negligently gave her unnecessary iron infusions.

Mrs G was already ill with end stage renal failure and receiving a fourth course of dialysis when the negligence occurred.

The Hospital gave her 7 months of iron infusions alongside her dialysis.

In some patients, these infusions can be very helpful in the prevention or treatment of iron deficiency anaemia. However, in Mrs G’s case, her iron/ferritin levels were already elevated and in administering yet more iron, the Hospital caused Mrs G to suffer an iron serum ferritin overload.

This in turn caused Mrs G to develop Porphyria Cutanea Tarda (PCT), an extremely painful skin condition, causing skin fragility, blisters and scarring.

To reduce her iron levels Mrs G had to undergo unpleasant blood draining (venesection) which caused her to collapse.

Unfortunately there is no cure for PCT. Mrs G will need to take medication and avoid direct sunlight for the rest of her life.

Mrs G instructed Pryers to investigate a clinical negligence claim on her behalf. Pryers put together a team of leading medical experts who confirmed that the Hospital had been negligent and advised on the injuries Mrs G sustained as a result.

Court proceedings were commenced against the Hospital Trust and an out of court settlement of £85,000 was agreed, which Mrs G was pleased to accept and move forwards with her life.
