Compensation for Cyclist Injured in a Hit and Run

Compensation for Cyclist Injured in a Hit and Run

£3,200 Settlement

Jamie was knocked off his bike in a hit and run accident, so he turned to Pryers Solicitors to help him claim for compensation.

Hit and Run

Jamie, a fit and healthy 25 year old, was cycling down Cromwell Road in Salford, when a black Corsa approached from the opposite direction. Before he realised, the car cut across his path to turn right into a side road. Jamie couldn’t do anything to stop quickly enough. He crashed into the car, forcing him to go over his handlebars onto the vehicle. He then rolled off the car onto the road.

Jamie was not surprisingly dazed and shocked, but by the time he looked up for the driver, the car had already driven away. As the car approached he had noticed a man was driving without any passengers. But he was unable to get any more details about the car or the driver.

Police Investigations

He was in quite a bit of pain, mostly down his right-hand side, but he was lucky not to have broken any bones. He reported the incident to the police. They looked for CCTV in the area, but they could not find any. Unfortunately, as black Vauxhall Corsas are quite common cars, they were unable to trace the vehicle or the driver.

Recovery and Compensation

Jamie was a kitchen porter so had to take a few days off work to recover. Even when he did return to work, the manual element of his work exacerbated his injuries for quite a while. Without cycling insurance and with the Police’s investigation coming up blank, he was not sure where to turn. So, he came to Pryers to see if he could claim compensation.

Our Personal Injury specialists have helped many cyclists and drivers. Including securing compensation for victims of a hit and run. We helped Jamie make a claim through the Motor Insurer’s Bureau Untraced Drivers Agreement. This is specifically designed for hit and run accidents. Fortunately, as Jamie had done all he could to trace the driver and reported the incident to the police, the Motor Insurer’s Bureau (MIB) and their investigators accepted responsibility for the accident on behalf of the driver. Jamie was happy to accept their offer of £3,200.

Jamie said; “I couldn’t believe it when the driver didn’t stop. You hear about hit and run drivers, but you never expect it to happen to you. I wasn’t really sure if I would be able to claim compensation as a cyclist, so I was so pleased Pryers were there to help me. Sarah was great, she was able to make sure that everything was included in my claim. She kept things moving along quite quickly and the MIB agreed to the claim within six months.”
