York Design Week

York Design Week – Project Koala

You might not expect negligence solicitors to get involved with York Design Week; but there is certainly more to us at Pryers than medical negligence and personal injury solicitors. Our great mix of colleagues enjoy a wonderfully diverse set of skills and hobbies. Ranging from musicians to our very own photographer.

Bright Young Things

Chris Kendall, who works in our Marketing team, is also a keen sports photographer. He often takes time off to chase cyclists around Yorkshire with his camera. We also enjoy hearing his surfing stories on a Monday morning. Before the coronavirus pandemic took hold of the UK, Chris joined a Bright Young Things meeting. They are a collection of people early in their careers in the creative industry.

They began to discuss the recent Australia bush fires, the most devastating bushfire season the country has ever seen. An estimated 8,400 koalas were claimed by the fires.

The group were therefore concerned about the long-term effect. They wanted to use their creative talents to raise awareness and funds.

Project Koala

So, they began to plan a trail around the city made up of nine koalas designed and created by different members of the team. Chris was delighted to take part. He provided a photograph of Rohan Dennis, an Australian cyclist who was on his way to winning gold in the men’s individual time trail at the Road cycling World Championships in Harrogate in 2019.

York Design Week

Unfortunately, the coronavirus pandemic moved the nation into lockdown, so the team’s plans had to be put on hold. They are now taking advantage of York Design Week and half term to showcase the koalas. This family friendly activity will be a fun way to learn more about the plight of the Australian bush.

Chris’ photo was used to design a 3D koala that hangs in our reception as part of the trail around York.

The trail maps are available here, so you can download the map to enjoy a Covid safe walking trail around the city. There are QR codes on each design where you can learn more or donate to WWF Bushfire Recoveries Urgent Appeal.
