Investigations are being held into the actions of Mr Hussien El-Maghraby, a neurosurgeon in Coventry, following the death of two of his patients.
Mr Hussien El-Maghraby, a consultant neurosurgeon employed by University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, has been stopped from performing two different surgical procedures by the Royal College of Surgeons and has been investigated by the General Medical Council.
Neurosurgery experts have examined footage which was taken during one of Mr El-Maghraby’s operations, involving the removal of a benign brain tumour, and have described it as “very very rough surgery”, which they were “appalled” by. The patient was left in a permanent vegetative state and later passed away. The experts were of the view that sadly, the patient’s death could have been prevented.
Prior to this, colleagues of Mr El-Maghraby had raised concerns regarding two operations which he had performed where he had removed healthy brain tissue instead of tumour. The family of one of these patients was initially not made aware of what happened during surgery.
Mr El-Maghraby is still employed by the hospital trust but was stopped from performing two specific surgical procedures until he has undergone further training.
